Angélica Martínez Pérez was born and raised in the island of Puerto Rico. Angelica is working towards her Ph.D. in Disability Studies (DS). She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Campus and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Currently, she holds a research assistantship position with the UIC Assistive Technology Unit (ATU).

Angelica’s previous work involved biomedical and clinical research in the areas of neurodegenerative diseases, muscular dystrophy, and organ transplant. Her interest in DS grew when she realized disability was not a major subject in Public Health courses. Furthermore, she noticed how the referral influx requesting assistive technology services among the Latino community was very small in comparison to other groups. This factor pushed her to pursue a career in DS.

Angelica is interested in curriculum development and strives towards integrating the field of Disability Studies with Public Health. Her research interests involve: promotion of assistive technology, occupational safety, health outcomes, and the Latino community.
